I love ghost hunting. I love the thrill of searching for the unknown, the excitement when something happens that cannot be explained by modern science. I love the expressions on people’s faces when the lights go out and the torch highlights the anticipation in their eyes. I love seeing their curiosity and watching them overcome their fears of the dark, of the noises when the building begins to settle, of the shadows created by the soft lights.
I am a paranormal investigator. I have worked for events companies, I have carried out private investigations, I now run my own company that combines both public events and private investigations and offers support and education... why do I do this?
As a child I experienced many 'strange' things. I saw a witch, laugh if you must but aged six and seeing a cackling witch on a broomstick as I put out the milk bottles turned me into a completely paranoid child, afraid of the dark, afraid of ghosts and goblins and demons and all other manner of story book monsters. Aged ten I wrote a short ‘horror’ story and it was published by a visiting author to our school. At that point I vowed to read and learn as much as I could so I would no longer be scared! My first ‘epiphany’ came soon after. My parents had been given a picture as a wedding present and it was in my bedroom. The crying boy always seemed out of place against the yellow and blue flowered wallpaper. I used to have terrible dreams of burning in a fire, to the point I would leave my parents little notes outside their bedroom door telling them how much I loved them should I die that night. I was an avid reader of ghost stories (probably the cause of my fears) but aged twelve began to read factual information and discovered the myth of the crying boy picture. Had I heard this myth before the dreams began? Not that my memory recalls.
As I grew I studied more. Psychology, Counselling, Behaviour Traits, Autism, Teaching. (To name a few). My interest in urban legends and ghosts never faded and I’d spend hours trawling through books. I wanted to know how mediums worked, how hypnotists managed to get people to do what they said and I wanted to know why I had those dreams and visions as a child. I worked in education, family support and had a brief stint with the fire service. I overcame my fears by learning more, by meeting new people, by experiencing new things. I met people who had real issues, peoples whose lives had been torn apart by debt, illness, separation, death. The more people I met, the more stories I was told. Everyone knows someone that has had a paranormal experience. I found myself not only supporting people in overcoming their difficulties by advising, building their confidence and sometimes just being a listening ear, but also comforting people who were scared, explaining other possibilities for paranormal experiences. If a person came to me and said they were experiencing activity in their home I would research the history of the building and inhabitants as much as possible but focus more on spending time with them discussing their life, their beliefs, their hopes and dreams. I realised that by empowering people to make their own choices and form their own opinions, that fear was no longer a factor.
I often get emails and calls from people experiencing phenomena. A few examples being:
A teenage catholic girl. Seeing shadows, hearing noises, feeling as if she was being touched but unable to discuss it with her family due to their religion and beliefs. Just by giving her the opportunity to talk, to discuss her concerns and her agitation with not knowing where to turn empowered her to ask advice on how to conduct an investigation, what the other possible causes of her experiences could be and she’s no longer scared of the unknown... she is now curious and is conducting her own research.
A recently separated mid 30’s man. Hearing noises, things in his home being moved around. After being able to share his experiences I set him a challenge and said I’d research the property if he did too. We both came up with the same information, but now he is confident to do the research himself.
A family of five. Mother seeing and hearing things, Father feeling as if he was being touched, children not sleeping well. I spent many weeks with the family discussing their experience. I carried out an investigation and found no reasons for the phenomena; however the empowerment the family felt by being a part of it and the additional support I gave them with setting a routine and boundaries have enabled them to move forward.
I carry out both public and private events with the same view. To empower people to make their own decisions. There are individuals who force their views and opinions on others. Religion is a prime example. This isn’t something I would ever feel comfortable doing. My opinion and beliefs are my own... I will give my opinion but ultimately it is YOU who decides what YOU believe.
Television is a major contributory factor in people’s beliefs and their expectations when it comes to phenomena, yet television companies seem more interested in the ‘entertainment’ aspect of investigations. I can see why... who wants to watch a group of people in a supposedly haunted location all night with nothing happening at all except like-minded individuals sharing their stories or an investigation team spending all night with no activity that can’t be explained by EMF sensitivity, plumbing or light reflection. Where is the entertainment value when I go in to a reported ‘haunting’, only to find that the person just wants someone to talk to and their ‘haunting’ turns out to be vibratory effects from traffic causing ornaments to fall and because they haven’t had an opportunity to talk to anyone and have only watched the shows instantly believe that it must be a poltergeist?
I am not in the paranormal industry to make money or become famous. I am in it as I believe in helping and educating people. I love the camaraderie, the sharing of information, the union of individuals from many different backgrounds in search of the same answers. I may never understand the reasons I dreamed in such vivid intensity as a child and may never be able to explain why I have seen the things I have. But I will continue to support, advise and enjoy watching others on their own journeys to enlightenment.
